The -orient option sets the current orientation.  The -auto-orient 
command adjusts the image so that it is upright based on its current 
orientation.

GM does not yet edit EXIF tags.  Since orientation may be stored in an 
EXIF tag the EXIF tag may become incorrect.

Someone did post some code for updating the EXIF orientation tag in 
GraphicsMagick but they did it in the bug report text area rather than 
submitting a proper patch.

There are only a few EXIF tags that GM really needs to update 
(orientation being on of them, as well as resolution).

My time/energy for working on GraphicsMagick is less than usual at the 
moment (due to day job) so I have been focusing on core performance 
issues or issues which personally interest me.

GraphicsMagick is an open source project so anyone with programming 
talents is free to study the source and develop a patch to add missing 
features.
