[graphviz-interest] How can one control the appearance of a loop edge?

See the attached dot file. The png shows how it looks when I render it. self-loop A is small (and cramped) self-loop B is large. However, self-loop B was created using a dubious and unstable dot construction. The line with xs on it is there to get the unstable construction to render as desired. Is there a sane and stable way to control the size of a loop edge? I've tried len and minlen but they seem to have no effect.
