I'm attempting a build of ver. 2.40 on Linux 14.04.5 LTS.
After:
./configure
make
I get this:
WARNING: 'automake-1.13' is missing on your system.
You should only need it if you modified 'Makefile.am' or
'configure.ac' or m4 files included by 'configure.ac'.
The 'automake' program is part of the GNU Automake package:

1) I have automake-1.14.
'apt-get install automake=3D1.13" says that 1.13 is not available.
(I also have the dependencies: autoconf, m4, and perl)
2) But the warning says I should only need automake if I modified one of
those three files, which I haven't.
3) I tried using 'gmake' instead, to bypass using the GNU tools, but I
don't have gmake.
Suggestions?
