John,
I (re)installed
autoconf automake m4 libtool libevent perl pkg-config
(libevent actually had to be libevent-2.0-5' )
and pkg-config was missing.
make got much, much further, but missing flex, even though I'm not building
from CVS, per the graphviz build notes. Installed flex with apt-get.
./configure
make
After several hundred warnings, mostly for type conversions:
make install
at the end of that:

dot -V gives 'program dot is not currently installed'.
gvpr the same.
find / -name dot finds only a couple of directories
/usr/local/lib/graphviz does show 12 libgvplugin files.
What happened (or failed to happen)?
Interesting that ./autogen.sh was required to get this far even though I
didn't download Mercurial sources.
