Emden,
scan.c exists but is empty.
nm lib/cgraph/.libs/scan.o | grep agsetfile yields no output.
Also no output before being piped to grep.
So, I re-loaded 2.40, and without touching anything,
./configure :
output at https://www.ideatreelive.com/ron/configure
make:
WARNING: 'automake-1.13' is missing on your system.
You should only need it if you modified 'Makefile.am' or
'configure.ac' or m4 files included by 'configure.ac'.
The 'automake' program is part of the GNU Automake package:
<http://www.gnu.org/software/automake>
It also requires GNU Autoconf, GNU m4 and Perl in order to run:
<http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf>
<http://www.gnu.org/software/m4/>
<http://www.perl.org/>
make: *** [Makefile.in] Error 1
Should I be downloading the "2.40-working" source instead of 2.40.1?

I still think you should start over with a fresh 2.40 source package, and<b=

<br>
=C2=A0?? configure<br>
=C2=A0?? make<br>
<br>
There should be no reason for extra tools (bison, flex, automake, etc.)<br>

that is a bug that should be fixed. Can you capture the output of<br>
