[07:54] <bluejay> Is `gst-launch-0.7 filesrc location="file.flac" ! flacdec ! vorbisenc ! filesink location="file.ogg"` the right way to transcode with gst?
[07:54] <bluejay> Do I need something else to get the tags too?
[08:12] ChrisHJW ([email protected]) left irc: Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)
[08:16] <bitpoet> bluejay: looks ok to me (assuming it works), and i don't know
[08:20] <bluejay> bitpoet: It seemed to work, but didn't catch the tags. I see the flactag plugin but no plugin to add tag info to any format or even to output it.
[08:28] <bitpoet> sorry, i'm kind of new at this. if there's no documentation, you might try looking for other programs that use gstreamer and write tags.
[08:30] <bluejay> np. thanks anyway

[09:02] Action: Company searches for "windows source" on emule
[09:02] Action: Company wonders how many of those 200+ .zip files are porn
[09:04] Action: Company wonders if writing a xine plugin would kill gst because both have their own ffmpeg
[09:05] <ds> only if they're loaded at the same time
[09:06] <ds> we could reasonably hide all the symbols in ffmpeg
[09:06] <Company> i dunno how xine works
[09:06] <Company> i only know that they grab ffmpeg cvs just like we
[09:06] thaytan ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[09:07] <Company> i was looking through the xine code the last days instead of working
[09:08] <Company> looking through source works with webcvs when you only have an xp machine...
[09:12] <Company> xine uses -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wnested-externs -Wcast-align -Wchar-subscripts -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-prototypes btw
[09:17] <thaytan> where do you work, Company?
[09:18] <Company> Lufthansa
[09:19] <Company> doing student stuff
[09:20] <thaytan> database work mainly, then, or do they do other things?
[09:20] <Company> databases, office stuff
[09:21] <Company> like maintaining the template for the 300 page agreements
[09:21] <Company> ... in word
[09:21] <thaytan> yeah, I've done that sort of thing before
[09:21] <thaytan> and Lotus Notes databases, urk! :)
[09:22] <Company> nope, we have IT stuff for "global" things :)
[09:22] <Company> and no notes, we're on exchange
[09:22] <Company> and Novell
[09:26] <thaytan> infiltrate them with linux ;)
[09:28] <Company> i'm not working in the IT department :p
[09:29] <Company> and IT still does big SAP and Peoplesoft buy-in
[09:30] <Company> though the lufthansa.com webservers are already Apache/Linux and they're running squid
[09:30] <thaytan> the edge servers are the best place, yeah
[09:31] <thaytan> Cisra (where I work) has BSD and linux boxes all over the server room
[09:31] <thaytan> but the workstations are mainly XP
[09:31] <Company> we're making the switch to XP atm
[09:32] <Company> they considered linux, but were afraid of being early so they took XP
[09:33] <Company> from what they say and my view of the open source desktop, the next switch in 5 years time will be Linux
[09:35] <thaytan> This year will see a lot of high-profile migrations, I believe

[10:57] <apoc> s/is/it's/
[10:58] <apoc> mathrick : how does NickServ work ?
[10:59] <mathrick> apoc: simple, you just /nickserv register, and later on, when connecting to server, you can /nickserv identify to prove you're really yourself. That gives you few nice services to use
[10:59] <mathrick> apoc: like killing a ghost, kicking nick thief and such
[11:00] <apoc> mathrick: ok thanks
[11:00] <bitpoet> what time zone are you guys in? you seem to keep the weirdest hours.
[11:01] <mathrick> apoc: one thing I don't seem to be able to do is to set access list, which would relieve me from manually sending pass after nick change. It keeps complaining host mask has too long username
[11:01] <mathrick> bitpoet: GMT +2:00 ATM
[11:01] <thomasvs> bitpoet: GMT+1

[11:51] <mathrick> yep, looks like it. Or maybe there's something we don't know about ;)
[11:52] <shawarma> That's what I though up until I did the automask thing. In that case there's something nickserv doesn't know about either. :-)

[11:53] <shawarma> mathrick: That makes nickserv automatically add your hostmask to your access list when you identify yourselv.
[11:53] <mathrick> shawarma: yep, read that in help already :)
[11:53] <shawarma> mathrick: So if you connect from the same machine again some time, you SHOULD be automatically accepted.
[11:54] <shawarma> mathrick: And that doesn't work either. Maybe they disabled access lists alltogether.
[11:54] <mathrick> huh? I did /nick mathrick|test, and got somethig like that:

[16:09] <sgbirch> Yes, the IP packates are transmitted to a number of hosts at the same time. The receiver has to create a socket on the specified multicast address
[16:10] <bluejay> zaheerm: That's what I was thinking of, but I don't remember exactly why. Could have been because audiounits are a framework very similar to gst, so I thought it might be simpler. The AudioHAL will probably run faster though.
[16:10] <bluejay> teuf: lame didn't catch the tags either, but -t did print them.
[16:10] <sgbirch> I was hoping the udp src would work with muticast, but there is no way to specify the address
[16:11] <teuf> bluejay: that's weird, it used to work ;)
[16:11] <teuf> though I'm not sure I ever tested transcoding from flac
[16:11] <bluejay> teuf: I updated to CVS head last night
[16:11] <zaheerm> bluejay: the AudioHAL seems as if it gives capabilities similar to what OSS gives Linux
[16:12] <teuf> bluejay: now you can try with a vorbis file as input and lame as output ;)
[16:12] <bluejay> teuf: *trying*
[16:12] <thomasvs> teuf: for now, only gst-ffmpeg
[16:12] <thomasvs> teuf: we can't distribute it on gnome anyway
[16:12] <thomasvs> woah - get two more people to join and we reach a record 50 :)
[16:13] <teuf> thomasvs: why can't you ?
[16:13] <thomasvs> teuf: have you seen what source code is in the ffmpeg source ? :)
[16:13] <zaheerm> bluejay: but yes...reading the AudioUnits stuff...it seems to offer similar capabilities
[16:13] <thomasvs> teuf: I cannot comment further or the MPAA will arrest me
[16:13] <bluejay> teuf: vorbisfile didn't print any tags, but `vorbiscomment` does.
[16:14] <bluejay> zaheerm: I didn't think on it very hard. You probably already know more than I found out.
[16:15] <mathrick> bluejay: btw, vorbisfile is deprecated now, use oggdemux and vorbisdec
[16:16] <bluejay> mathrick: :-P it was the preferred one last time I checked!
[16:17] <bluejay> mad didn't get any tags either. . .
[16:17] <mathrick> bluejay: it == vorbisdec? it was before Company rewro^Wfixed it ;)
[16:17] <mathrick> s/vorbisdec/vorbisfile/
[16:17] <bluejay> yeah
[16:18] <mathrick> bluejay: but seriously, it's way better than vorbisfile
[16:18] <bluejay> oggdemux didn't even play it. (command line `gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location=Jethro\ Tull\ -\ Cup\ Of\ Wonder.ogg ! oggdemux ! osssink`)
[16:18] <mathrick> bluejay: b/c it's probably the first implementation of ogg demuxer that doesn't decode vorbis at the same time
[16:18] <mathrick> bluejay: of course it didn't
[16:18] <mathrick> bluejay: it's demux only, not decoder
[16:19] <bluejay> so, vorbisdec after oggdemux?
[16:19] <bluejay> nope
[16:19] <mathrick> bluejay: yep, something like that
[16:19] <bluejay> "WARNING: erroneous pipeline: could not link vorbisdec0 to osssink0"
[16:20] <bluejay> spider got the tags. How can I see what elements spider picked?
[16:21] <mathrick> bluejay: ! float22int
[16:21] <mathrick> bluejay: IIRC
[16:21] <mathrick> bluejay: you cannot, not w/o hacking, and certainly not from gst-launch
[16:22] <mathrick> bluejay: AFAIK, spider is to be considered black box, and tinkerink with it is highly discouraged
[16:23] <bluejay> mathrick: `gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location=Jethro\ Tull\ -\ Cup\ Of\ Wonder.ogg ! oggdemux ! vorbisdec ! float2int ! osssink` gives me WARNING: erroneous pipeline: could not link vorbisdec0 to float2int0
[16:23] <mathrick> bluejay: did you run with -v ? what were the caps?
[16:24] <bluejay> "/pipeline0/float2int0.src: caps = audio/x-raw-int" looks wrong.
[16:25] <mathrick> bluejay: why? it should be like that
[16:25] <bluejay> oh, right. I keep getting src and sink mixed up.
[16:25] <bluejay> vorbisdec isn't mentioned
[16:26] <mathrick> bluejay: hmm, link it to fakesink instead of float2int and look at caps
[16:27] <mathrick> bluejay: but it doesn't have anything except audio/x-raw-float in template, which doesn't leave too much choice ;)
[16:27] <bluejay> mathrick: yeah, it produced x-raw-float
[16:27] <mathrick> bluejay: so it should be accepted by float2int
[16:29] <bluejay> yeah. should
[16:30] <bluejay> `gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location="Jethro Tull - Cup Of Wonder.ogg" ! oggdemux ! spider ! lame ! filesink location=Jethro\ Tull\ -\ Cup\ Of\ Wonder.mp3` printed tags but didn't preserve them.
[16:31] <teuf> bluejay: maybe something got borked then :-/
[16:32] <mathrick> bluejay: you should probably poke Company then, he's the one who wrote tags and oggdemux :)
[16:32] <bluejay> 'k. Thanks. :)
[16:32] <teuf> bluejay: or maybe spider ate the tags in the last example
[16:34] <bluejay> teuf: ` gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location="Strawberry Fields Forever.mp3" ! {mad,spider} ! osssink` doesn't print tags or I'd try an mp3->mp3
[16:38] Tycho ([email protected]) left irc: "asdf"

[16:39] kmaraas ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[16:39] <bluejay> mathrick: hmm, buffer-frames is 0 in vorbisdec but [1..] in float2int
[16:42] <iain_> thomasvs: most of it
[16:42] <iain_> ie I have no clue what its trying to tell me
[16:42] <iain_> and why something isn't working
[16:43] <bluejay> mathrick: id3tag does read the tags, but doesn't (of course) play the music. So I'm not sure what pipeline to set up to copy mp3->mp3
[16:43] <mathrick> bluejay: I remeber some discussion recently, 0 IIRC means undefined. It's float2intnew or something that Company created fro that
[16:44] <mathrick> bluejay: AFAIK, just insert id3tag before mp3dec you use, it will work automagically (ie. id3tag should just strip id3 part and pass rest of data untouched)
[16:45] <mathrick> bluejay: hmm, you don't use decoder in that pipeline, do you?
[16:47] <bluejay> mathrick: `gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location="Strawberry Fields Forever.mp3" ! id3tag ! mad ! osssink` printed tags and played fine. I'm trying `gst-launch-0.7 -t filesrc location="Strawberry Fields Forever.mp3" ! id3tag ! mad ! lame ! filesink location=test.mp3` now
[16:47] <bluejay> no tags there either
[16:47] <bluejay> Does it work for any of you?

[17:49] <kl100> I have compiled the hello_world program against an uninstalled version of gstreamer 0.7.2

[17:51] <thomasvs> kl100: how did you autogen/configure your uninstalled copy ?
[17:52] <kl100> erm, I didn't
[17:52] <kl100> I compiled against the dynamic library in /gst/.libs
[17:53] <kl100> I just ran gst-register andstill get the same error

[21:29] <thomasvs> dolphy: it's renamed to hermescolorspace
[21:29] <ds-work> we have 4 colorspace elements now

[22:14] <taaz> thomasvs: last commit still did it.
[22:14] <dolphy> thomasvs: because totem.c code has to stay backend agnostic
[22:14] <taaz> thomasvs: perhaps there is a newer syncmail out there somehwere that could be merged in with local changes...

[22:31] <dolphy> * definition is iffy */
[22:31] <dolphy> typedef struct poptOption GstPoptOption;
[22:31] <dolphy> that looks useless

[23:12] <ibsteveog> ok guys, i have a question on what gstreamer is capable of...
[23:13] <ibsteveog> i want to take the output of my program (it produces frames on the display at 2-3 fps) and use gstreamer to encode it to mjpeg and send it over the network for another machine to display
[23:14] <ibsteveog> does this sound feasible?
[23:16] <Uraeus> ibsteveog: sounds like it yes
[23:16] Action: ibsteveog cheers
[23:18] <ibsteveog> what i don't see how to do is to get my program's frames into gstreamer
[23:24] <Uraeus> ibsteveog: a custom plugin maybe?
[23:24] <Uraeus> ibsteveog: or maybe turning your app into a plugin
[23:27] Action: ibsteveog goes looking for docs on how to write a src plugin
[23:28] <ibsteveog> =\ docs say FIXME: write
[23:28] <Uraeus> the plugin writers guide should be rather extensive now
[23:29] <Uraeus> ibsteveog: I would take a look at the videotestsrc, I would guess that plugin could be said to look somewhat like your app situation
[23:32] dolphy ([email protected]) left irc: "Network down, IP Packets delivered via UPS"
[23:33] <dlehn> we probably should have some element to make this sort of thing easier
[23:33] <dlehn> like RawSrc or something
[23:33] <dlehn> which would just let you create your own buffers and push them into a pipeline
[23:34] <dlehn> so that it would be easier to hack gst pipelines into other apps that just want to encode
[23:34] <dlehn> or whatever...
[23:34] <Uraeus> dlehn: well make it or file a bug report suggesting it :)
[23:35] Nick change: dlehn -> taaz
[23:35] Action: taaz wonders why nick changed...
[23:36] <bitpoet> ibsteveog: i started with videotestsrc. it supports about 20 formats, so it's more complex than most sources need to be, but it works.
[23:36] <bitpoet> i could probably write up what i've figured out so far about writing sources.

[23:36] <ibsteveog> yes, i thought you had already written something up

[23:38] <bitpoet> though my code is fairly well commented. whoever wrote videotestsrc doesn't seem to know what comments are.

[23:52] <ivan_> but i don't know how i have to do this
[23:53] <ivan_> somebody can you help me ??
[23:54] <bitpoet> ibsteveog: it's "ximagesrc" for now, but yeah, it's an x11 source
[23:55] <bitpoet> now that i understand it, i could go through and document videotestsrc, if you guys want...
