[11:15] <thomasvs> a really bad one too
[11:17] <wheels> thomasvs: Well, I think it was more common there at one point, but there at least in the US it's much more common in the south.
[11:18] <wheels> thomasvs: There's sometimes an odd overlap and things that migrate around between regions of English speakers.
[11:18] <wheels> thomasvs: I've wondered before -- did you at some point spend a while in a native-English speaking area?
[11:19] <thomasvs> wheels: no, never

[14:08] <Uraeus> iain: that took you some time :)
[14:11] <iain> I was watching Dog Day Afternoon
[14:12] <iain> so I wasn't here, sorry :)
[14:12] <iain> then I played guitar too..
[14:12] <iain> when is guadec?
[14:15] <Uraeus> june
[14:15] <Uraeus> 28th-30th June
[14:16] <iain> oh bugger, really?
[14:16] <iain> man, BobDylan is playing belfast on the 29th
[14:17] <Uraeus> the glory days of bob are so long ago that it is not even funny man
[14:17] <iain> yeah I know, but I still want to be able to say I've seen him
[14:18] <iain> seeing as I can't get to see the Pixies cos I'm away in Kosova
[14:18] <Uraeus> then buy a prune
[14:19] <Uraeus> hmmm, the keynote speakers this year are moving in a new direction it would seem
[14:28] <iain> how close is the kristiansand youth hostel?
[14:29] Action: iain goes for the cheapest options :)
[14:31] <Uraeus> Kristiansand is not a big city, and the university is downtown as far as I can remember
[14:31] <Uraeus> which means that is the hostel is downtown it is walking distance
[14:31] <Uraeus> (most things in Kristiansand are)
[14:33] <iain> when I was in Toronto, most things were in walking distance, I can probably hack a small european city :)
[14:33] <iain> just so long as its not like copenhagen where you needed a 20 minute train journey to get there
[14:34] <Uraeus> hmm, I have tons of old Manga VHS tapes, wonder if I should pack them down or just throw them in the trash
[14:34] <Uraeus> iain: it is nothing like copenhagen
[14:34] <iain> I'd love to get the boat...it'd be just like a family holiday when I was 11
[14:35] <Uraeus> what boat?
[14:36] <iain> newcastle to kristiansands
[14:36] <iain> but it would only get me back to uk on the 2nd july and I'm leaving for Kva then
[14:37] <Uraeus> ah
[14:40] <wheels> Uraeus: Ah, uhm, aren't you going to be at $someOtherRandomLocation around then? :-)
[14:41] <Uraeus> wheels: no, I be back then, or at least for the last 3-4 days
[14:41] <wheels> Uraeus: "back" == Norway?
[14:41] <Uraeus> wheels: yes
[14:42] <Uraeus> wheels: I could stop by germany on my way to spain
[14:42] <wheels> Well, it's not exactly "on the way" but of course you'd be welcome.
[14:43] <Uraeus> wheels: fun thing is that I will attend GUADEC as the last thing before my trip and then go to the KDE gathering as the first thing upon my return :)
[14:43] <Uraeus> wheels: so I think be the tannest guy at the KDE gathering :)
[14:43] <wheels> Uraeus: Ending old habbits and starting new ones? :-)
[14:43] <wheels> er, habits
[14:44] <wheels> Uraeus: Probably. Though there was a Danish guy there last year that looked like he had fallen asleep in the sun and stayed there for about a week last year. :-)
[14:45] <Uraeus> ugh, you allows danes at KDE meetings, not good :)
[14:45] <Uraeus> could be worse I guess, you could allow swedes to attend
[14:46] <wheels> Uraeus: And once we allow that the Norwegians are sure to think that they'll be allowed too. ;-)
[14:47] <Uraeus> hmm :)
[14:47] <Uraeus> its not norwegians, its the norse :)
[14:48] <wheels> bleh
[14:50] <Uraeus> yeah, you people in southern europe hate that name, cause it reminds you on who kicked everyones ass through the middle-ages :)
[14:50] <Uraeus> southern europe == below denmark :)
[14:51] Action: wheels notes that his family is from north of denmark. :-)
[14:52] <wheels> Well, so long as we're talking about Europe. For the last few generations they've been settled south of Europe altogether. :-)
[14:54] <Uraeus> yeah, we people from the north have seen the need for going out to share our magnificense with the world :)
[14:54] <sublett> hehe

[14:56] Action: wheels looks at the map and notes that where he grew up is a bit further south than Cairo.

[15:09] <jdahlin> dinner?
[15:09] Action: jdahlin needs to eat breakfast
[15:14] Action: wheels too :-)
[15:20] <jdahlin> norweigans are weird.
[15:22] <wheels> jdahlin: Well, you missed above where he was making fun of other scandanavians. :-)
[15:24] <jdahlin> wheels: I hope it wasn't swedes
[15:24] <wheels> jdahlin: They were included, but I belive he was a bit harsher on the danes. :-)
[15:24] <jdahlin> good for him
[15:26] Action: wheels praises the advantages of being an ethnic mutt. :-)
[15:33] <Tack> thomasvs: At 5am I was very much _not_ up. :)
[15:33] <thomasvs> Tack: I can imagine :)
[15:33] <decadix> why do i need to add a timeout callback to make gstreamer work? :)
[15:34] <thomasvs> Tack: have some more of those screenshots ?
[15:34] <thomasvs> decadix: why do people ask sweeping questions without providing context ?
[15:34] <thomasvs> oh wait
[15:34] <thomasvs> that was not a sweeping question
[15:34] <thomasvs> and it had context
[15:34] <thomasvs> sorry
[15:34] <jdahlin> lo thomasvs
[15:34] <thomasvs> morning johan
[15:34] <decadix> the context is quite simple, thomasvs
[15:34] <thomasvs> time for breakfast :)
[15:34] <thomasvs> decadix: simple is not the same as missing
[15:34] <jdahlin> thomasvs: I see that you found a competitor for dave dina
[15:35] <thomasvs> jdahlin: hehe :) the world is full of competitors for it
[15:35] <decadix> the simplest pipeline possible, { filesrc ! spider ! osssink } will not work, unless i add a GLib timeout callback
[15:35] <Tack> thomasvs: Not yet. Still coding a lot of the GUI stuff, so not much is built yet.
[15:35] <thomasvs> decadix: have you looked at getcontrol ? it does something similar on directfb and it can use gst
[15:35] <thomasvs> decadix: are you sure it's in a thread, and not just a pipeline ?
[15:35] <decadix> 1) no 2) yes
[15:35] <thomasvs> sorry, first one was for tack
[15:36] <thomasvs> decadix: well, if it's a thread it's not the most simple pipeline :)
[15:36] <decadix> whatever, it's broken
[15:36] <thomasvs> decadix: anyway, if it really is a thread, and you set it to playing, and you make sure you actually ahve a mainloop, it works here
[15:36] <thomasvs> decadix: where is your source ?
[15:36] <decadix> it doesn't work on FreeBSD.
[15:36] <thomasvs> ah, freebsd.
[15:36] <thomasvs> still, where is the source ?
[15:37] <Tack> thomasvs: Never heard of it. Checking it out ...
[15:37] <decadix> you want me to code a testcase?
[15:37] <thomasvs> decadix: you already have a testcase, no ?
[15:37] <decadix> yes, bit it's part of a big project
[15:37] <thomasvs> Tack: getcontrol.sf.net
[15:37] <decadix> s/bit/but/
[15:37] <thomasvs> well yeah, a simpler testcase would work so we can reproduce
[15:37] <decadix> ok moment
[15:37] <thomasvs> Tack: btw, are you jason tackberry ?
[15:38] <Tack> thomasvs: What a terrible interface this thing offers. Looks nice though, but also confusing. :)
[15:38] <Tack> thomasvs: That I am.
[15:39] <thomasvs> Tack: well, don't say so when dolphy is around, it's his project
[15:39] <thomasvs> Tack: my project has just as bad an interface though
[15:39] Action: jdahlin nods
[15:39] Action: jdahlin and runs
[15:39] teuf ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[15:40] <thomasvs> well, it works for smart people
[15:40] <thomasvs> for some reason swedes have an issue with it though
[15:40] <Tack> thomasvs: I think my goals are a bit different than getcontrol's. What I'm looking at is more of a freevo/myth type of project.
[15:40] Action: thomasvs doesn't run
[15:40] <thomasvs> Tack: so why not freevo/mythtv ?
[15:41] <Tack> thomasvs: Yes, well, that's the age old question. I do use freevo and am happy with it mostly. I feel it's slow in places it shouldn't be, and the interface is clunky and slow and poorly laid out. Mostly I had this idea to use mplayer as a platform and I suffer a bit from NIH. :)
[15:42] <thomasvs> Tack: hm ... but eventually you'd like to switch to gstreamer instead ?
[15:42] <thomasvs> Tack: (btw, what video card do you use to display to TV? )
[15:42] <iain> todays lesson...guitar amps sound much nicer at volume 7, but hurt your ears a lot more
[15:43] <dilinger> iain: but they sound divine at 10 :)
[15:43] <thomasvs> 11
[15:43] <thomasvs> always 11
[15:44] <Tack> thomasvs: I'm not sure if gstreamer is really viable yet, but I think it would offer more flexibility. For example, one of the effects I want to do is have the video stream animate from the menu -- for example if you're browsing a list of movies, when you select a movie, it starts playing in a little muted thumbnail, and if you select it, it zooms full screen and starts playing. Well, perhaps that interface needs work, but you get the idea.
[15:45] <iain> dilinger: my ears keep popping when I play that loud...
[15:45] <Tack> thomasvs: I have an Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 and use nvidia binary drivers. It works great and supports overscan (at least with the older drivers -- pending bug). I also have a PVR-350 but ivtv isn't quite there yet for tv-out, and mplayer doesn't support it yet.
[15:46] Action: thomasvs hugs his matrox cards
[15:46] Action: dilinger gets noise complains from his neighbors
[15:46] <dilinger> s/complains/complaints/
[15:46] <Tack> thomasvs: What do you use?
[15:47] <Tack> Another limitation of mplayer is dynamically changing/inserting/removing filters to the chain. I need that and it means I'll have to hack mplayer in its very ugly nether regions.
[15:48] <wheels> Tack: As opposed to the very ugly other parts? :-)
[15:48] <thomasvs> Tack: www.davedina.org -> is what I work on
[15:48] <Tack> wheels: Well mostly my hacking has been limited to a separate video filter which is all my own code, so it hasn't been so bad. :)
[15:49] <thomasvs> Tack: I'm in the "prototyping functionality by hacking bits together" stage still though
[15:49] <thomasvs> Tack: since I don't have as much free time as I'd like :)
[15:49] <thomasvs> Tack: btw, getcontrol's interface is completely programmable, and gobject-ified.
[15:49] <thomasvs> Tack: so you're not stuck with the circular interface (which I dislike too btw)
[15:50] <Tack> thomasvs: Hmm, looks like we have very similar goals. :)
[15:50] <Tack> What language are you coding it in?
[15:50] <thomasvs> Tack: right now a mishmash of whatever works
[15:51] <thomasvs> Tack: when I start working from the ground up again, probably python
[15:51] <thomasvs> Tack: since gst has good bindings now, and it's easy to work with python
[15:51] <Tack> Mine's in python as well. I couldn't imagine doing this in C :)
[15:51] <thomasvs> this sort of project requires medium-sized scripting, really, so C is too complex for it imo.
[15:51] <Tack> I've done a bunch of stuff in C and asm for performance, but the real logic is in python.
[15:51] <thomasvs> yeah - that's why it'd be nice to use gstreamer.
[15:52] <thomasvs> since all the intensive stuff already is in C there.
[15:52] <thomasvs> anyway, obviously my project is a long-term plan, and more something to keep me busy.
[15:52] <thomasvs> I'd like it to be really good, but I don't get that much help so it doesn't advance very quickly.
[15:53] <Tack> I built bmovl2 for mplayer, a filter that lets me do bitmap overlays with zindexes and alpha channels and other goodness. Then I wrapped Imlib2 in python, and built a canvas system on top of bmovl2 using python. Now I'm building the GUI system over the canvas. It's working really well, but I know that eventually I'm going to run into limitations with mplayer.
[15:54] <thomasvs> hm.
[15:54] <thomasvs> so you always have mplayer running, even if say you're playing games or music ?
[15:54] <Tack> Plus I built a VFS with asynchronous _everything_ that is terribly responsive.
[15:54] <Tack> That's right. mplayer is like X.
[15:54] <Tack> It's there to render the video.
[15:54] <Tack> The alpha blending is just too cool.
[15:54] <thomasvs> do you run mame on it for example ?
[15:55] <Tack> No, no mame.
[15:55] <thomasvs> Tack: well, the alpha blending can be done in other ways
[15:55] <thomasvs> Tack: do you know directfb ?
[15:55] <Tack> No, I don't know it, but yes I know that'd be another way :)
[15:55] <thomasvs> well, directfb handles this nicely. everything can be alphablended in it.
[15:55] <jdahlin> Tack: maybe you should look into cairo
[15:56] mxpxpod ([email protected]) left irc: "To quit or not to quit.. wait... was that a question?"
[15:56] <Tack> Does directfb support nvidia?
[15:56] <Tack> I thought it didn't.
[15:56] <jdahlin> (instead of imlib2)
[15:56] <thomasvs> Tack: so you'd have to write an mplayer output driver for mame for example
[15:56] <thomasvs> Tack: I think it does, yeah, lemme check
[15:56] <decadix> thomasvs: http://lefort.be.eu.org/gst-test.c
[15:57] <decadix> (see the comment above the while loop)
[15:57] <Tack> thomasvs: That's right. Or specifically a bmovl2 output driver.
[15:57] <thomasvs> Tack: it has support for nvidia, I don't know how complete it is yet though
[15:57] <thomasvs> what's bmovl2 ?
[15:58] <Tack> jdahlin: I could, and use fdo's X server for the alpha stuff. But do you know if all that works with Xv?
[15:58] <Tack> thomasvs: bmovl2 is the filter/protocol for mplayer that receives instructions on what to render to the display.
[15:59] <jdahlin> Tack: I think you can get cairo accelerated with help of xrender and I don't think you need the fdo X server for that
[15:59] <Tack> It's all bitmap based though, it doesn't support primitives like rectangles or fonts or anything, so that logic has to be done in the application.
[15:59] <jdahlin> You'd have to ask on #freedesktop to get a definite answer though
[15:59] <Tack> I don't think using Cairo alone would buy me anything?
[15:59] <Tack> Imlib2 is quite optimized.
[16:00] <jdahlin> vector drawing
[16:00] <jdahlin> I'm not sure if imlib2 is being developed, or maybe I'm confusing imlib1 vs imlib2
[16:01] <decadix> i think it has been replaced by libart + gdkpixbuf, jdahlin
[16:01] <decadix> imlib is gtk 1.x stuff
[16:01] <Tack> Imlib2 is being developed, but not frantically. 1.1 is fairly new and it works well.
[16:01] m_wheels ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.

[16:02] wheels ([email protected]) left irc: Nick collision from services.
[16:02] Nick change: m_wheels -> wheels
[16:03] <jdahlin> decadix: for gnome and so yes, but I think the enlightenment guys still uses imlib in its second incarnation
[16:03] <decadix> ah, dunno about that
[16:05] <Tack> I'm a little weary about relying on X though. My ultimate agenda is to have things work with the output of my PVR-350. Directfb would be a better match.
[16:05] <Tack> But mplayer has an output filter for directfb too, so ... :)
[16:06] <jdahlin> I wouldn't be too worried about using X, it gives you lots of things for free
[16:06] <decadix> beers? :)
[16:07] <Tack> jdahlin: It does, but ... well for example I have never seen interlaced video display properly on tv-out with X.
[16:07] <jdahlin> and it's not that heavy, everybody has 15-20M free
[16:07] <Tack> I have no idea if it can bedone. :)
[16:07] <Tack> There are always vsync problems and the fields get all torn up.
[16:07] <jdahlin> I have to admit I'm clueless on tv-out
[16:08] Action: wheels votes to deprecate TV.
[16:08] <Tack> I second that. TV and all interlaced video :)
[16:08] Action: jdahlin asks wheels to buy him a real projector instead
[16:09] <wheels> jdahlin: I've always considered getting a cheap one from eBay...
[16:09] <wheels> jdahlin: But not for you. :-)
[16:10] <jdahlin> d'oh!
[16:11] <wheels> But well, I don't even have a TV, so...
[16:11] <jdahlin> me neither, but my flatmates doesn't have a projector I can steal when I like to watch movies so...
[16:11] <thomasvs> Tack: the matrox cards are better for that
[16:12] <thomasvs> Tack: for example, there's an mga_vid driver that handles it perfectly. only works with mga400 though.
[16:12] <thomasvs> and there's a special mga dfb output for mplayer that handles it without tearing too.
[16:12] <Tack> thomasvs: I remember reading about that but I couldn't find a Matrox 400.
[16:13] <Tack> I got the PVR-350 instead.
[16:13] <Tack> Watching CNN and that scrolling text at the bottom with Xv (and at least my nvidia) is gross. :)
[16:14] <jdahlin> I'd say just watching CNN is gross :-)
[16:14] <Tack> Well, it's good for testing. :)

[16:45] <iain> but its easter monday, so everywhere is shut
[16:45] <Tack> Oh yeah :)
[16:45] <Tack> Good point. Hmm.
[16:45] <Tack> Well Tim Hortons has to be open. They're always open.
[16:46] <iain> I live in N. Ireland
[16:46] <iain> we don't even have Starbucks
[16:46] <iain> (yet)
[16:46] <Tack> We don't have Starbucks here (Canada) either, I don't think. Our Starbucks in Tim Hortons, except that the coffee is better and things are priced sanely.

[16:54] <jdahlin> I doubt you even have *coffee* over there
[16:54] <jdahlin> but I don't drink it so
[16:55] <Tack> Well if by coffee you mean the espresso tar that Italians drink, then not exactly. I mean we have it in some speciality coffee shops but it's not what we call coffee. :)
[16:56] <jdahlin> I've talked to a couple of spanish guys before that said when they were abroad they couldn't really find any coffee
[16:56] <jdahlin> that means coffee by the spanish standards of course
[16:57] <wheels> jdahlin: Actually coffee shops in North America have great coffee.
[16:57] <iain> I've never been in a coffee shop that has great coffee

[16:59] <decadix> hehe
[17:00] <decadix> i suppose for now i just need to recreate my pipeline when switching songs...
[17:01] <jdahlin> iain: so do I, but the coffee shops in amsterdam are famous for other things

[17:05] <jdahlin> not necessarily
[17:06] <Tack> I'm just not in the know. :)
[17:06] <Tack> No more doddling, off to get that coffee. afk.
[17:06] <lilo_booter> heh

[18:20] <Tack> thomasvs: Okay. The package I build has an mplayer binary that needs a wack of libraries, like libdvdread, liblirc, etc., but I imagine you won't have any troubles there.
[18:21] <Tack> You can try out the package and see if it works for you, then I'll send you the actual patches for mplayer, which are currently in a bit of a state of disarray since I've been hacking mmap support.
[18:21] <Tack> But the speed gain is impressive, so it's worth it :)
[18:21] <Tack> Basically the way it works is:
[18:22] <Tack> I spawn mplayer with bmovl2=/path/to/some/fifo on the filter chain. When I want to render something, I do the image manipulation in python (with pyimlib2 I wrote), and over the fifo it tells mplayer "Ok, render the image with shmem id 'foobar' at these coordinates, alpha, zindex, etc." and then suddenly the bitmap appears overlaid atop of the video.
[18:23] <walters> thomasvs: hey. what do you think about pushing 0.8.1?
[18:25] <thomasvs> Tack: well, I have some heavy customizations too, and I'm pretty sure you don't have mplayer with dfbmga with fusion support enabled, so I guess I can only start from your mplayer patches anyway.

[19:01] <thomasvs> Tack: I'm trying to figure out what makes dfbmga chose a colorspace to output in
[19:01] <Tack> thomasvs: That stuff is still a mystery to me.
[19:03] <thomasvs> argh, I was afraid you'd say that :) this stuff is confusing me terribly.
[19:03] <thomasvs> Tack: hm, so in what colorspace is your filter accepting stuff/drawing, then ?
[19:03] <Tack> I consider my success with hacking mplayer to be merely luck. :)
[19:04] <decadix> is an user interface for it in the todo?
[19:05] <Tack> thomasvs: Well, in terms of the filter, I just tell it which colorspaces I support, and mplayer makes sure whatever data I get is in that colorspace.
[19:05] <Tack> thomasvs: You might look at vf_scale.c where it does some intelligent decisions about what format to use.
[19:06] <decadix> mplayer doing anything intelligent? lies.

[19:32] <jdahlin> does it work with gst-player or totem?
[19:32] <jdahlin> Tack, now when I think about, I'm not sure if cvs builds without pygtk HEAD
[19:32] <jdahlin> +it

[19:32] <Tack> Well, I don't actually have a keyboard or mouse on this box. It just outputs to my tv. And I can't seem to control gst-player from command line.
[19:33] <Tack> Yeah, that's the trouble with bleeding edge.
[19:34] <Tack> On my FC2 box I have a gstreamer-properties. That doesn't exist on my rh9 system -- how do I adjust the default video sink without that tool?
[19:34] <thomasvs> Tack: gconf-editor

[19:34] <Tack> Hmm.
[19:35] <LeRoutier> default and/or 0.8/default
[19:35] <Tack> It occurs to me there could be the problem. I installed gstreamer cvs into a different prefix and it probably didn't update the gconf schemas.
[19:35] <Tack> Well nevermind, it seems in one piece. :)
[19:36] <decadix> should i file a bug reports for warnings?
[19:36] <Tack> But actually, player.py explicitly uses xvideosink so that's just a red herring.
[19:36] <decadix> for instance, ** (gstreamer-properties:290): WARNING **: Unrecoverable syntax error while parsing pipeline
[19:36] <thomasvs> decadix: depends on the warnings
[19:36] <thomasvs> decadix: what's the pipeline ?

[19:41] <decadix> (and v4lsrc/xvideosink)
[19:42] <Tack> Ok :)
[19:42] <jdahlin> Tack: why do you want the .la files btw?
[19:42] <decadix> btw, someone must s/lstat/stat/ in gstreamer-plugins, sys/oss/gstosselement.c
[19:44] <Tack> jdahlin: I don't, particularly, but rpm complains when there are installed but unpackaged files, and this was the simplest way to shut it up. If there's a more correct fix, that's fine. :)
[19:44] <decadix> some committer around?
[19:44] Action: jdahlin pokes thomasvs
[19:44] <Tack> I do remember some discussion a while back between mharris and AC about keeping the .la files, though I can't quite remember the rationale.

[19:45] <thomasvs> Tack: correct fix is deleting them
[19:45] <decadix> let's see
[19:45] <thomasvs> Tack: from fedora-newpackage: find $RPM_BUILD_ROOT -type f -name "*.la" -exec rm -f {} ';'
[19:45] <decadix> still the same warnings, LeRoutier
[19:46] <jdahlin> thomasvs: where should I put that?
[19:46] <Tack> At the end of %install I assume.
[19:46] <thomasvs> jdahlin: end of %install section, right before %clean
[19:46] <Tack> There is no %clean in this spec, so just at the end of %install.
[19:46] <thomasvs> no %clean ? blasphemy !
[19:47] <decadix> actually, none of the video sinks can be tested in gstreamer-properties
[19:47] <Tack> :)
[19:47] <decadix> (failed to construct pipeline)
[19:47] <jdahlin> I should get Matthias to look at it
[19:47] <thomasvs> decadix: hm, it sounds like there's a flex/bison problem on freebsd
[19:47] <thomasvs> decadix: do the pipelines work from gst-launch ?
[19:47] <decadix> gimme a sample video pipeline
[19:48] <thomasvs> videotestsrc ! xvimagesink
[19:48] <decadix> thomasvs, works indeed :)
[19:48] <decadix> nice test btw
[19:48] Nick change: markey -> markey|afk
[19:49] <jdahlin> Tack: so, committed to pygtk head
[19:49] <jdahlin> thanks for the patch
[19:50] <Tack> jdahlin: Thanks.
[19:50] <thomasvs> decadix: hm, puzzling
[19:50] <thomasvs> decadix: well, you could add some debugging printfs to the parsing code to see what it's barfing on
[19:50] <Tack> jdahlin: With player.py, replacing fakesink with ximagesink or xvimagesink still yields no video. Is there any other changes that need to be made? videoplayer.py displays a window, but since I have no mouse or keyboard, I have no way of controlling it. :)
[19:51] <decadix> hm, another time
[19:51] <jdahlin> Tack: there is a possible change that you don't have the right plugins installed
[19:51] <jdahlin> s/change/chance/
[19:51] <Tack> Let me try remote display just to see.
[19:53] <thomasvs> Tack: I'm assuming you'd also be using lirc for input ?
[19:53] <thomasvs> Tack: I'm wondering if it would make sense to write a GUI-based lirc config file creator
[19:54] <Tack> thomasvs: It might, but it'd be app-specific.
[19:54] <Tack> thomasvs: Yeah, plan on using lirc.
[19:55] <jdahlin> "... Every day new code is added to Linux in Russia, China and elsewhere throughout the world. Every day that code is incorporated into our command, control, communications and weapons systems. This must stop"
[19:55] <jdahlin> This must stop!
[19:55] <Tack> jdahlin: Please tell me that's parody.
[19:56] <wheels> Yeah, just think what they could do when they control my apartments radar controlled water baloon launcher!
[19:57] <thomasvs> Tack: well, I've been thinking about it lately, since the number one question from people with a fresh install of dave/dina was "so I got a nice woman on the screen, and a menu that disappeared after two seconds ... what do I do now ?"
[19:57] <LeRoutier> oh, Green speach
[19:57] <thomasvs> where the answer is, you configure the remote from the command line by logging in and so forth ... :)
[19:57] <thomasvs> Tack: so, arguably, I should be providing a lirc config app that gets started like firstboot would be on a regular system, and probably has a webbased backend as well.
[19:57] <thomasvs> Tack: any thoughts on that ?
[19:57] <Tack> thomasvs: Configuring lirc from the user's perspective is pretty easy and doable with a GUI, but making a GUI to configure lircd with all the various hardware and remotes has got to be a tough job.
[19:57] <jdahlin> Tack: nope
[19:58] Action: jdahlin lost the link
[19:58] <thomasvs> Tack: well, I'd just only allow serial for now, so it would be the GUI equivalent of running irrecord
[19:58] <thomasvs> Tack: with the added change that I'd be showing pictograms for buttons to press, and the user would be pushing those buttons
[19:59] <Tack> jdahlin: I'm beginning to think I don't have the right codec/plugin/whatever. Is there a way to check that?
[19:59] <wheels> jdahlin: The funny thing is that this assumes that nothing from, say, MS comes from Russia or China...
[19:59] <jdahlin> Tack: What kind of file is it?
[19:59] <jdahlin> Tack: what is the video stream encoded with?
[20:00] <Tack> jdahlin: It's an avi encoded with lavccodec, so I'm guessing I need ffmpeg plugin, but I'm more curious as to what tools I'd use if I didn't already know that. :)
[20:00] <thomasvs> Tack: does gst-player play it at all ?
[20:01] <Tack> thomasvs: Yeah, that'd be doable, assuming their IR receiver supports that. My hauppauge receiver would only detect signals from the WinTV remote (or compatible ones, I think it's Phillips)
[20:01] <Tack> thomasvs: It plays the audio, but the video is black.
[20:01] <Tack> I'm pretty sure I need ffmpeg plugin, since gst-inspect only shows ffmpegcolorspace, and on my FC2 system it shows a whole bunch of things. But I'm still a little lost in gst's architecture, so I could be off :)
[20:02] <thomasvs> Tack: ah, and you don't have gst-ffmpeg installed ?
[20:02] <Tack> So is this a separate thing I need to check out from cvs? :)
[20:02] <thomasvs> Tack: yeah, compile and install gst-ffmpeg, then run gst-register, then run the player again on it
[20:02] <thomasvs> Tack: since recently, yes
[20:02] <Tack> mmkay.
[20:03] <Tack> What magic does gst-register perform?
[20:03] <thomasvs> checking the plugins, and updating the registry that describes them
[20:04] <LeRoutier> Tack : load all .so in /usr/lib/gstreamer-MAJOR.MINOR, call an init function to gather plug-in info and stores all this in an XML file
[20:04] <thomasvs> so gstreamer apps don't need to scan them all on startup
[20:04] <Tack> LeRoutier: Presumably /usr/lib isn't hardcoded, since I've gstreamer installed under /opt
[20:04] <jdahlin> right
[20:04] <jdahlin> $libdir/gstreamer-$MAJOR.$MINOR/
[20:04] BBB ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[20:04] Action: Tack nods.
[20:04] <LeRoutier> hello ronald
[20:05] <Tack> So I'm missing gst-ffmpeg, which is likely the (or one of the) problem, but is there a way for gst to know intelligently that I was missing the codec needed to display the video?
[20:05] <thomasvs> Tack: yes, there is, but that's currently not how the autoplugger works.
[20:06] <Tack> Can I do a gst-tell-me-if-i-can-play-this-file-or-what-im-missing file.avi ? :)
[20:06] <thomasvs> Tack: which means, the autoplugger just figures out everything it can currently playback
[20:06] <jdahlin> I'm sure the distributions would love to distribute that binary
[20:06] <thomasvs> Tack: if you assume that your avi contains video, then yes, you can tell it to "tell me if I can play video"
[20:06] <Tack> So there are no hooks in autoplugger to handle failures?
[20:06] <thomasvs> Tack: not in the current one, because the current one is set up so generally
[20:06] <Tack> I see.
[20:06] <thomasvs> Tack: it can play back text files as audio for example.
[20:06] <Tack> jdahlin: I bet :)
[20:07] <thomasvs> Tack: but it's just a matter of changing the autoplugger, really.
[20:07] <thomasvs> Tack: basically, what happens is that it's able to figure out that it's avi, and then the demuxer just creates a pad for each type of stream inside the avi
[20:07] <thomasvs> Tack: so if avidemux creates a video pad, then it contains video.
[20:08] <thomasvs> Tack: I think right now the autoplugger just ignores that pad if it doesn't know how to decode the caps it's getting from it.
[20:08] <Tack> gst-ffmpeg automake stuff appears to be confused that I've gstreamer installed in /opt
[20:08] <BBB> hi LeRoutier
[20:08] <Tack> thomasvs: Hmm, I think I grok.
[20:10] Action: BBB waves at ds-work
[20:12] <Tack> Does gst-ffmpeg auto stuff not use pkgconfig?
[20:12] <BBB> it does
[20:12] <thomasvs> Tack: did you set PKG_CONFIG_PATH ?
[20:12] <BBB> set PKG_CONFIG_PATH
[20:12] <Tack> I did.
[20:12] <BBB> to /opt/lib/pkgconfig?
[20:12] <Tack> PATH, PKG_CONFIG_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH all get set.
[20:13] <Tack> Actually the way it works is I do /opt/package/version, symlink /opt/package/version -> /opt/package/current, and then construct the appropriate PATH, PKG_CONFIG_PATH, and LD_LIBRARY_PATH from /opt/*/current/
[20:13] <Tack> This scheme has served me quite well :)
[20:14] <Tack> Hm. Well maybe I fudged the --prefix I passed to configure ...
[20:14] <jdahlin> Tack: Never thought about using something like jhbuild?
[20:14] <Tack> No, never thought about using something like that :)
[20:15] <Tack> GST_CFLAGS and GST_LIBS looks right ...
[20:16] <Tack> But alas, ext/ffmpeg/gstffmpeg.c isn't getting compiled with GST_CFLAGS and GST_LIBS.
[20:19] <Tack> http://sault.org/~tack/broken.html -- any ideas?
[20:19] mxpxpod ([email protected]) left irc: Read error: 60 (Operation timed out)
[20:20] <Tack> GST_FLAGS and GST_LIBS looks correct, but gstffmpeg.c doesn't seem to be getting those passed.
[20:21] <Tack> There are just so many more interesting problems to solve than this one.
[20:21] BBB ([email protected]) left irc: "Download Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/"
[20:23] mxpxpod ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[20:23] <Tack> The Makefile references GST_CFLAGS, but doesn't actually contain the definition for it ...
[20:24] <Tack> Manually adding them makes things work.
[20:24] <ds-work> wheels: Las Vegas airport has a casino.
[20:28] Nick change: markey|afk -> markey
[20:28] <Tack> So now I have ffmpeg plugin, only when I try to play something with it, it spews endlessly lines about header damaged / decoding error: ERROR default(16919) gstffmpegdec.c(405):gst_ffmpegdec_chain:<ffdec_msmpeg40> ffdec_msmpeg4: decoding error
[20:28] <Tack> I fear this just mightn't be in the books. There is a higher power that will not have me hack on gstreamer :)
[20:29] <thomasvs> argh
[20:29] <thomasvs> we need to get you sorted :)
[20:29] <thomasvs> Tack: can you try a basic video file instead ?
[20:29] <thomasvs> none of that lav crap :)
[20:30] <Tack> Crap? Ahem. :)
[20:30] <thomasvs> Tack: also, BBB will be interested in a sample video of yours to check
[20:30] <Tack> Well I have a bunch of mpeg2 files captured from my wintv.
[20:30] <thomasvs> none of those work at all ?
[20:32] <Tack> The mpeg doesn't work, although at least it popped up a window, even if it is blank. With the mpeg2, I get lines of damaged/concealing errors, and every few seconds about 0.1s of audio.
[20:32] <Tack> [mpeg2video @ 0x409ea648]concealing errors
[20:32] <Tack> [mpeg2video @ 0x409ea648]ac-tex damaged at 19 7
[20:32] <Tack> ... etc.
[20:32] <Tack> Lessee, what else do I have ...
[20:32] <thomasvs> Tack: this is still with gst-player right ?
[20:33] <thomasvs> Tack: can you get, say, matrix.avi from http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/media/large ?
[20:33] <thomasvs> and try with that ?
[20:33] <Tack> thomasvs: No, it was with player.py, since gst-player requires console operation and this is a remote box.
[20:34] <Tack> An mpeg1 file I have with mp3 audio plays the audio fine, but the video is garbage, with more of the above errors.
[20:34] <Tack> I'll try matrix.avi ...
[20:35] <thomasvs> Tack: you don't happen to have more than one copy of gst installed, do you ?
[20:35] <Tack> Nope.
[20:35] <Tack> matrix.avi plays.
[20:35] <Tack> Sort of.
[20:36] <thomasvs> sort of ? :)
[20:36] Action: thomasvs reboots firewall, maybe gone for a sec
[20:36] <Tack> Well, X is using 50% cpu, and python is using the other 50%. :)
[20:36] <Tack> So it's dropping frames and skipping audio.
[20:37] <Tack> Oh, I was using ximagesink, instead of xvimagesink. Well that still doesn't explain why python is using 50%.
[20:38] <Tack> xvimagesink makes it playable.
[20:38] <Tack> jdahlin: But what on earth is going on to make python use 20-30% CPU ?
[20:38] thomasvs ([email protected]) left irc: Read error: 54 (Connection reset by peer)
[20:40] <Tack> I like gstreamer's architecture.
[20:41] <walters> Tack: perhaps you're attaching to a signal that's fired very often?
[20:42] <Tack> walters: It doesn't seem so, but I'm not sure. I'm just using player.py that comes in gst-python examples.

[21:10] <seb128> to summarize
[21:12] Action: walters notes a bug in the suggested pipeline
[21:12] <walters> (that should be /system/gstreamer/0.8/default/audiosink)
[21:12] <seb128> no change
[21:14] <LeRoutier> perhaps audioscale in the middle should do it ?

[21:19] <seb128> ok, no idea guys ?
[21:20] <ds-work> use osssink from CVS
[21:21] <seb128> no way
[21:21] <seb128> sorry, but it's for the debian package, and I'm not going to package a CVS version of anything
[21:21] <ds-work> then pull the osssink patch from CVS
[21:21] <Tack> thomas: http://sault.org/~tack/mebox/bmovl2-2004-04-12.patch -- you can start by applying that to your mplayer (diffed from last night's cvs).

[21:25] <seb128> taaz: here ?
[21:25] <thomasvs> Tack: do you have like a sample app as well to test out if it works ?
[21:26] <Tack> If you have PIL, you can use the little snippet of code that's in DOCS/tech/vf_bmovl2.txt
[21:27] jdahlin ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[21:27] <Tack> thomasvs: Actually no, that won't work since the protocol changed ...
[21:28] <Tack> thomasvs: Add a "0" argument on the end of the RAWIMG command in that snippet, so that the string part reads "RAWIMG foobar %s %d %d 1 0"
[21:28] <Tack> That changed since I added shmem support.
[21:28] <jdahlin> I missed the action from the last hour
[21:28] <jdahlin> Tack, any success yet?
[21:29] <Tack> jdahlin: Somewhat. Success in that I can play at least matrix.avi that's linked off gstreamer's website, but it doesn't play anything else of mine. :)
[21:29] <jdahlin> Tack: broken mencoder!
[21:29] <jdahlin> :)
[21:29] <Tack> And python is sucking up 20-30% CPU for no special reason (that I can see) when I play.
[21:29] <Tack> jdahlin: I really wonder if that's true. :)
[21:30] <jdahlin> remember python is dlopening gstreamer, so it's actually gstreamer that takes up 20-30%
[21:30] <Tack> Oh, good point.
[21:31] Uraeus ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[21:31] <Uraeus> hello

[21:33] <decadix> 19:42:52 < decadix> btw, someone must s/lstat/stat/ in gstreamer-plugins,
[21:33] <decadix> sys/oss/gstosselement.c
[21:33] <Uraeus> decadix: make a bug report please :) I hate code fixes on IRC :)
[21:33] <jdahlin> Tack, put a small test file up somewhere and file a bug. I'm sure Ronald or Company will fix it when they get a chance to
[21:33] <decadix> heh
[21:33] <Uraeus> jdahlin: hur var påsken for deg?
[21:33] <Tack> jdahlin: Ok.

[21:35] <decadix> man stat; man lstat
[21:36] <Uraeus> jdahlin: is decadix change ok? should I do it?
[21:36] <Tack> thomasvs: I'll package up mebox so you can at least see what I've done so far, and see what some of the possibilities are. You'll need to install the RPMs at http://sault.org/~tack/mebox/
[21:37] <jdahlin> decadix: are you sure it's never going to be a link?
[21:37] <decadix> well that's the point, the current implementation assumes it is never a link (uses lstat())
[21:37] <decadix> you must use stat() instead, as it might be a link
[21:37] <jdahlin> oh, right

[21:50] <Uraeus> heh, yes I am trying to bring Oracle management style to GStreamer CVS :)
[21:51] Action: wheels runs
[21:51] <Uraeus> wheels: I will do a talk on Oracle management style in August :)
[21:52] <jdahlin> omg
[21:52] <wheels> Uraeus: Well, I suspect that I get enough of the "style" on a daily basis. ;-)
[21:53] <Uraeus> wheels: the talk will be called 'whipping KDE into shape the Larry way' :)
[21:54] <wheels> Uraeus: Well, I may end up with a similarly boring talk -- but only if it comes with a few thousand euro sponsorship. :-)
[21:55] <Uraeus> hehe :)
[21:55] <Uraeus> I am growing a beard atm to look as much like Larry as possible :)
[21:55] <wheels> Uraeus: (SAP is considering sponsoring it, which would mean me doing a talk on "SAP and the Linux Desktop" or something similarly boring. I presume the only people that would attend would be those wanting to have something to pick on me for later. :-) )
[21:57] Action: Uraeus wonders if Oracle will enable Bluecurve look and feel in Oracle applications when its certified for Solaris and Linux
[21:57] <ds-work> it looks like I'm going to be self-employed for at least a few months, so I need to figure out how to make GUADEC and KDE business trips
[21:58] <Uraeus> ds-work: you quit your university job?
[21:58] <ds-work> I'll be here for 4 more weeks
[21:58] <ds-work> approx
[21:58] <ds-work> even talking to some people about swfdec development
[21:59] <wheels> Uraeus: See, I just need to tell the SAP guys that "Oracle will be sending a representative" -- then they'll want to smear the SAP banner all over the thing. :-)
[21:59] <Uraeus> ds-work: someone is interested in sponsoring that?
[21:59] <Uraeus> wheels: good :)
[21:59] <ds-work> apparently embedding Flash in an application costs $$$

[22:00] <Uraeus> wheels: Oracle sponsored GUADEC in dublin and had a booth there during the conference, don't think they had a lot of people coming over to ask questions :)
[22:00] <BBB> yay
[22:00] <Uraeus> ds-work: well I really hope that works out
[22:00] <BBB> ds-work: *squeeze*
[22:00] <BBB> ds-work: I need you to do something for me
[22:01] <wheels> Uraeus: Yeah, but it's fortunate that for Oracle or SAP sponsoring these things EUR 5000 or so is really cheap.
[22:01] <ds-work> Uraeus: me too, that job would be fun
[22:01] <BBB> add support for GST_TYPE_BUFFER values in caps/structures
[22:01] <ds-work> BBB: um, ok
[22:01] <wheels> Uraeus: Most of the time SAP spends a lot more than that on any trade show...
[22:01] <ds-work> BBB: ok. You can do it now by using gst_structure_add_value()
[22:01] <BBB> I tried gst_caps_set()
[22:02] <ds-work> yeah, GST_TYPE_BUFFER isn't in the switch
[22:02] <Uraeus> wheels: btw, does the kioslave plugin work now?
[22:03] <BBB> and I use g_value_set_boxed() then?
[22:03] <wheels> Uraeus: No. I still mean to get to it today, but we'll see...
[22:03] <ds-work> BBB: yes

[22:04] <wheels> Uraeus: You mean ones in the last couple-o-days?
[22:04] <decadix> shouldn't gst-inspect report if a property is readable and/or writable?
[22:04] Action: wheels isn't subscribed to gstreamer-cvs.
[22:04] <Uraeus> wheels: no, in the last week or so, I been away kinda all easter
[22:05] <wheels> Uraeus: Well, after the initial checking I fixed a few small things, but it still never really worked.
[22:05] <wheels> Uraeus: I promised that I'd get around to it, but such hasn't happened yet.
[22:05] Action: wheels did make it to the top of the KDE bug fixers list this weekend though. :-)
[22:06] <BBB> (process:29313): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: don't know how to fixate type GstBuffer
[22:06] <BBB>
[22:06] <BBB> hm...
[22:06] <Uraeus> wheels: is that a list of number of bugs fix with or without bug caused deducted? ;)
[22:06] <BBB> bleh
[22:06] Action: BBB bugs ds-work again
[22:07] Action: wheels throws a parse error at Uraeus
[22:07] <Uraeus> hehe :)
[22:08] <ds-work> BBB: ah, crap
[22:08] <BBB> I get those infinitely
[22:08] <BBB> enjoy fixing :p
[22:08] <ds-work> buffers just need to be added to the list of fixed types
[22:08] Action: BBB reminds ds-work that the fixation loop is essentially infinite unless something happens inside it
[22:08] <BBB> how do I do that?
[22:09] <ds-work> I'll do that presently
[22:09] <BBB> I'm not planning on updating CVS, I'm off in +/- 5 minutes ;)
[22:10] <ds-work> BBB: gstcaps.c, line ~532
[22:11] <ds-work> add 'if (type == GST_TYPE_BUFFER) return TRUE'
[22:12] Action: BBB tries again

[22:14] <ds-work> hermescolorspace should handle that
[22:14] <ds-work> at least, 8 -> 32 RGB
[22:14] <ds-work> don't know if it negotiates caps for that, though
[22:14] <BBB> ffmpeg doesn't know 8bit yet ;)
[22:14] Action: BBB didn't implement 8bit caps in it

[22:17] <thomasvs> jdahlin: depends if I am guessing right in swedish :)
[22:17] <taaz> seb128: i guess i don't know what that problem is
[22:18] <seb128> BTW the /system/gstreamer/0.8/ tree is empty in gconf-editor
[22:18] Action: taaz upset at himself for not having the 0.8 packages done yet... overload of todo items

[22:18] <seb128> taaz: and have you read mails about 0.6.5 ?
[22:19] <taaz> yeah, i'll do those debs too.
[22:19] <seb128> ok
[22:19] <seb128> good luck with all this work :)
[22:19] <BBB> hm
[22:19] <BBB> only gray
[22:19] <seb128> btw 0.6.5 should not be such a big work
[22:19] <seb128> isn't it ?
[22:20] <taaz> almost no work at all with one exception
[22:20] <taaz> i'm not sure what to do with the unversioned binaries
[22:20] <seb128> 0.6.5 still has unversioned binaries ?
[22:20] <taaz> so does 0.8
[22:20] <taaz> the idea being they pick the proper versioned ones to run
[22:21] DBordello ([email protected]) joined #gstreamer.
[22:21] <seb128> I was thinking that 0.6.5 was providing -0.6 suffix
[22:22] <taaz> eh... i think it does... but the unversioned addtional binaries are present in 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8
[22:22] <taaz> i'm not sure from a debian viewpoint how to package those
[22:23] <thomasvs> taaz: in the main lib ?
[22:23] <taaz> ?
[22:23] <DBordello> When playing music through gstreamer there is clicking (using muine). Anybody know a fix? I believe it using using alsa (gstreamer-properties)
[22:23] <thomasvs> ah, the unversioned ones
[22:23] <thomasvs> just in one package, which gets built from both ?
[22:23] <thomasvs> DBordello: muine uses gst 0.6 doesn't it ?
[22:23] <ds-work> taaz: create a gstreamer-tools-unversioned with just those, and make 0.6 tools depend on it
[22:24] <Zeenix> thomasvs: had a look at the howto?
[22:24] <DBordello> thomasvs, i am not sure, when it starts it says Initializing GSTreamer Core Library version 0.6.4
[22:24] <thomasvs> DBordello: yeah, then it uses 0.6.4 alsa doesn't work well in that version
[22:24] <thomasvs> Zeenix: not yet, it was easter :)
[22:25] <DBordello> thomasvs, what is the easiest way to make it use oss?
[22:26] <thomasvs> DBordello: just use oss emulation in alsa
[22:26] <DBordello> thomasvs, i have oss emulation running, not sure how to make muine/gstreamer use it
[22:26] <thomasvs> DBordello: and make sure /system/gstreamer/defaults/audiosink reads osssink (in gconf)
[22:26] <DBordello> thomasvs, gotcha
[22:28] <DBordello> thomasvs, i have gstreamer .8 installed, could that be a problem? setting audiosink to osssink didn't help either
[22:28] <DBordello> thomasvs, in the gstreamer-properties dialog the 'clicking' is even present with the test tone, but only for oss, not alsa
[22:28] <taaz> ds-work: ie, have 0.8 provide that package now. but that method doesn't work too well if, say, a tool is renamed or removed and 0.6 apps still want the unversioned name to refer to
[22:29] <thomasvs> DBordello: no, change it in gconf
[22:29] <thomasvs> DBordello: gstreamer-properties probably is compiled against 0.8
[22:29] <DBordello> thomasvs, yes, i did change it in gconf also. Same result (clicking)
[22:29] <ds-work> taaz: why do you worry about things that haven't happened?
[22:30] <ds-work> and aren't likely to

[22:40] <Tack> The state of things is a horrible mess and hackish, but you'll get an idea. :)
[22:43] <Tack> Currently no lirc. Control is done via the console where you run mebox. (Careful not to actually press keys in the mplayer window, since that won't work too well.) If it scrolls slowly for you, you might try using xterm instead of gnome-terminal, since gnome-temrinal is slow as fuck.
[22:49] <Tack> http://sault.org/~tack/mebox/shot.png shows the list widget and thumbnailing stuff in the VFS. Of course that's not the actual interface, but you get the idea.

[02:41] <gphat> read to the end I guess

[02:42] <gphat> oh
[02:42] <ds-work> gphat: id3 is considered a container format in gstreamer

[02:54] <gphat> oh
[02:54] <gphat> shit
[02:55] <gphat> I was fiddling in the linking to the sink rather than the add to pipeline
[02:56] <ds-work> by the way, it may not be clear from the documentation, but it's a lot easier to construct pipelines with gst_parse_launch() than piecing them together by hand
