    16 bit is enough for transformation, but not for quantization, where 32 bit are need.  In the
code native ints are used for performance of the C code ( in most of the architectures is better
to use the native bit size rather that a shorter one), but of course one should revert to 16 bit
when using MMX/Altivec.
