Complex compile/configure problem with fontconfig

Hello folks,

I am trying to compile ImageMagick on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and I am running 
onto the following problem:

The reason seems to be that I have a very old X11 with an old 
fontconfig (without the defines) in /usr/X11R6 and a new fontconfig in 
/usr/local. I would like to make sure the newer one is picked up, but 
at least the older one's include file is picked up. I can do that by 
putting a full path for fontconfig.h in type.c but then I also want to 
make sure /usr/local/lib/libfontconfig.a is used (statically) and not 
the dynamic one in /usr/X11R6.

How can I make sure this happens?
