mencoder encodes by default with rather a nice mpeg4 codec. You need
to install the matching decoder to be able to play it back.

On a mac I usually use perian:

  http://www.perian.org/

It's a quicktime component that lets you play back (almost) all of the
divx/xvid/etc. family of formats natively in quicktime player. If you
install flip4mac as well you can also play almost all non-DRM'd wmv
formats.

On windows people usually use media player classic, VLC or GOM player
(vlc with a nicer GUI). All of these can play (almost) any format,
including quicktime and wmv.

Alternatively, you can ask mencoder to use a more commonly available
format, such as mpeg2. But your file sizes will be much greater and
the quality will be worse.
