Are you doing this via PHP? If so, you may need help from some more 
familiar with handling images in PHP.

What kind of processing do you need to do that you cannot do it with 
IM? Can you give us a step by step processing in a functional form? 
Seems like IM should be able to do it all.

You should certainly be able to process one page of a pdf (or any 
other imag) into a thumbnail with IM.

So perhaps I don't really understand your bottom line processing and needs.
