works fine for me on IM 6.5.8-6 Q16 Mac OSX Tiger.


#make fully transparent rose: image
convert rose: \( -size 70x46 xc:black \) -compose copy_opacity 
-composite rose_trans.tif


# turn transparency off
convert rose_trans.tif +matte rose_trans_off.tif

Note, I believe that IM only supports one alpha channel in any image.
