It may be that the thumbnails still have a lot of profile information
When generating a thumbnail you should use  -thumbnail instead of
-resize. This not only has speed optimizations for very large scale
image size reductions, but also does a  -strip  to remove any profile
information is which generally not needed for a small thumbnail image.
