Checkboard transparency?

Hi folks,

Im trying to get transparency to show up with the pattern:checkerboard,
but attempting to set -background pattern:checkerboard doesn't seem to be
valid. i get the needed chain of commands, but i guess my question comes
down to, how do you set up the background as checkboard before making the
alpha use the background?
