Please recompile the 1394 drivers with CONFIG_IEEE1394_VERBOSEDEBUG
switched on. I.e. "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" or "make gconfig"
and go to Drivers -> IEEE 1394 (FireWire) support -> Excessive debugging
output.

The 1394 drivers will then log massive amounts of debug data to the
kernel log which may tell something more about the failure mode. These
debug data may exceed what dmesg can get from the kernel's log buffer,
hence you may have to obtain the log from /var/log/messages or whatever
file your distro uses for kernel messages. Also, it may be too much to
post at kino-dev; in that case upload the log to a website or to the
sourceforge.net bugtracker and post the URL here.
