Yes, and quite likely the problem is external to the computer and
software if you tried it on multiple computers, the card initializes,
and registers itself in kernel. The typical response here is to try a
new cable, which you did. So, maybe there is a problem with the
camera. Perhaps take the camera and cable to work, friend's house, or
store just to see if it can be detected on a different OS.
