Yes, but it is not straightforward. Basically, you have to use the composite transition[1] without keyframe animation and bit of cleverness. First, try to get a picture-in-picture working and then build on that knowledge. To do a true split screen, you will generate some sort of background color/gradient/picture[2] and then render 2 composite transitions using the generated background and clip A. Then, repeat using the result of the previous step with clip B.
