Clip freezes

I'm a new user to Kdenlive.

Here's all I've done so far with it;

1.  Load a .avi clip into the project tree.  The avi clip size is 1.2 
Gb.....I've tried 12 Gb too.

2.  I click Play in the Project Monitor and the clip plays for about 1 
seconds then the video "breaks up" and freezes.....the the Kdenlive 
usually just goes "gray" and crashes.


How can I fix this problem?
