Lost frames, or what else?

Hi,

I'm pretty new to this list, but I swear I have been looking around for
days before asking my question here. So I hope it's not that trivial.

I'm grabbing old tapes, both VHS and 8mm, using a Canopus ADVC 110
converter. I did it many times in the last few months, but know I have a
brand new PC equipped with an Athlon X4, and now I have serious
problems.

Whatever is the command for grabbing, kino or dvgrab, even in single
user mode with nice -19, I got DV files which clearly show sudden jumps
of scene.

Wait a second: I don't speak english as my native language, so I have to
explain some how what I mean. I don't mean lost frames, because kino
ends the capture with zero dropped frame. I just mean that when I watch
the resulting DV files, with kino o mplayer or whatelse, quite often I
see (and hear) something that otherwise I would considere the effect of
some lost frames.

This happened sometimes with my old computer, which was a P4 at 2,4GhZ,
monocore (at least 7 years old). But with this new PC I simply cannot
get good captures any more.

What could the problem be?

1) The Canopus has some problems?
2) The firewire card is not working well with my new motherboard?
3) Multi core can cause problems someway?

I'm running Lenny with the default kernel. I only had compiled
alsa-driver because my audio card (NVidia MCP61 with VIA coded) is not
supported by the alsa-driver 1.0.17, the default on Lenny.

Any hint would be very much appreciated.
