Sorry for being so crass when you were only trying to help, dhk.

Aleksandr's problem sounds like the problem I have with using Kino
ALSA output on my machine (device=3Ddefault). For me, /dev/dsp works
good. Others need to configure with ALSA but launch it with
'pasuspender - kino' (with those spaces exactly). I would try every
combination including shutting down pulseaudio with 'pactl exit' and
trying with both 'default' and '/dev/dsp'.

Why all this? Well, partly because Kino has a fundamental flaw in the
way it does audio output, but it worked fine until pulseaudio showed
up. Now, I am not placing blame on pulseaudio as it seems to work
quite well now. However, Kino audio output was working perfectly fine
with OSS and ALSA until right about the time PA appeared on the scene.
Then, there was the turmoil to be expected with any large change like
that. Since then, Kino has suffered bit-rot due to lack of
maintenance. I am not sure if things changed in ALSA to accomodate PA
and exposed these problems or what happened.
