wheels are more convenient and more intuitive, yes. Curves are more
powerful, though. 
They both tweak the balance of the colour channels. Wheels have more of
an overall effect. You shift the balance towards a certain hue with the
only variation being the choice between shadows, mids and highs. Curves
allow a lot more fine-grained tweaking and tuning.
The way I like to think about it is that with curves, you define a
transfer function all yourself. With wheels there is a hard-coded
transfer function that you specify the parameter for (towards which hue
to shift).

That's my view of things, at least.
