Thanks to SoftImage!

Avid SoftImage made a great presentation this month at Linux Movies
Hollywood. Thanks to Justin Leach, Craig Becker, and Seth Tamrowski of
SoftImage for coming out to present, and to Jennifer Goldfinch of SoftImage
for arranging it. And, thanks to Dan Novy and Flash Film Works for providing
the meeting room. We had a little adventure with the room during the last
hour when the A/C cut out, but everyone stuck with it despite the unexpected
heat wave.

Justin Leach discussed his work on GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE produced
at Blue Sky in Japan. Distributed by DreamWorks, the feature opens in
theaters September 14th. Justin said that being in Japan was very different
for him, that in Japan one person does many more tasks on a shot. Working in
American studios he was used to focusing on character setup. He said that
everyone at Blue Sky is using Linux.

Justin demonstrated SoftImage|XSI Advanced, the high-end version. SoftImage
also comes in the basic Foundation version and mid-level Essentials version.
The most noticeable difference between Advanced and Foundation is that
Advanced includes a node-based compositor.

Big news at the SIGGRAPH convention last month was the low price of the new
release of SoftImage|XSI Foundation 4.0. At $495 it's much more powerful
than anything else in its price range. I just got a copy of Foundation 4.0
myself and finding it a lot of fun. You can download a 30-day free trial
version of the Windows version from the SoftImage web site now. The Linux
version is expected to be available later this month.
