Hi Bob,
that is not strictly true, although LiVES is currently aimed at home users.

First, there is no maximum frame size in LiVES.

Second, for colorspaces, if you look at the current spec for LiVES 
realtime processing:

you will see that one of the supported palettes is RGBA float (packed 
32bit float giving a 128 bit pixel size) which should be adequate for 
any future use.

The reason this palette is not used so much now:
- there are no readily available sources for such image formats
- AFAIK there is no intermediate image format for such frames
- there are no encoders for RGBA float
- there are no filters (yet) for this colorspace; in particular we are 
lacking resize functions for non-integer colorspaces.

However LiVES does have some features which a traditional NLE does not 
have, e.g.
- it can be used as a VJ performance tool
- it can be controlled remotely
- events can be recorded in realtime, shown on the multitrack timeline, 
adjusted, and then rendered.

I looked into supporting industry standard EDL's, but they seemed much 
too complex. LiVES has its own EDL (called an event_list), and I have 
managed to combine events (time based) and filters (pixel based) into 
one single architecture. This will allow for some nice future 
developments like timeline plugins.
