We have gone the XML route.  It makes it easy to expand in any direction.

Much of what Bob wishes for is exactly what we are doing, only not in the 
open-source (as in free beer) realm.  Again for this high-end workflow you 
need fairly tight control to insure you don't loose accuracy. It's pretty 
specific to a certain workflow and unless you come from the background, 
understanding everything needed can be overwhelming. (Don't believe me, take 
a look at Apples products for high-end, and not Shake, it isn't a real Apple, 
it's an Orange disguised as an Apple).  For the type of workflow Bob speaks 
about Apple addresses very little and they make great products.

Bob points out studios who roll out their own product will be reluctant to 
distribute it. Very true.... Most studios even put their employees under NDA 
and anything they develop while employed is the property of the studio.(Have 
a friend going thru this right now).

It's very much a catch 22 for high-end products and open-source in this 
industry but headway is being made.
