Re: uname distro?

Hi Robin!

A change to the uname command or a /etc/release file was discussed by 
the LSB group a while ago, but it seems it has not really found it's way 
into any distribution so far. I guess the best bet for now is to check 
for the following files:

Novell SuSE
/etc/SuSE-release

Red Hat
/etc/redhat-release, /etc/redhat_version

Fedora
/etc/fedora-release

Slackware
/etc/slackware-release, /etc/slackware-version

Ubuntu
/etc/ubuntu-release

Debian
/etc/debian_release, /etc/debian_version,

Mandrake
/etc/mandrake-release

Yellow dog
/etc/yellowdog-release

Sun JDS
/etc/sun-release

Solaris/Sparc
/etc/release

Gentoo
/etc/gentoo-release

And if this doesn't work (esp. older dists don't seem to have these) 
check the contens of the all famous /etc/issue file. :-)
