LiLAX June Meeting: Introduction to VOIP and Asterisk

LiLAX and the Cerritos Linux Users Group are proud to present Darryll Straus 
on: Saturday, June 10, 2006 in SCC 810 in Building 8 on the east side of 
California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA from 11:00AM to 
3:00PM.

Introduction to VOIP and Asterisk

        Voice of IP (VOIP) allows telephone traffic to travel over a local or
wide area network instead of traditional phone lines. Asterisk is an
open source application that lets you use a Linux system as a telephony
hub. It can be used as a phone switch with features like multiple
extensions, voicemail and interactive voice response systems, or to
develop telephone enabled applications.
        This talk will cover the basics and VOIP and Asterisk. You should walk
away understanding the terminology, capabilities, and benefits of VOIP
and Asterisk. With the very low cost options available, our hope is that
it will inspire you to explore Asterisk on your own.

Digital Ordnance was founded by Daryll Strauss, a major force in Linux 
development; having been involved with the product since it?s inception. As a 
pioneer in the use of Linux for the post production industry, Daryll Strauss 
has been writing graphics software since the late 70?s. He began his career 
writing image processing code in the Aerospace industry before taking his 
graphics skills to Hollywood to become a developer of visual effects 
software, in the process, changing the way the film industry creates special 
effects.

He is the man who first ported hardware accelerated 3D support for Linux on 
the 3dfx Voodoo Graphics cards, allowing them to be used for video game 
animations and Hollywood graphics, subsequently he wrote drivers for many 
other graphics cards, some of which are still in use today. For the film 
industry he has worked at with several big name facilities designing software 
for film scanning and recording, color calibration, production, rendering, 
and facilities management. 

In 1997, while at Digital Domain, he designed and built the now famous Linux 
cluster used to render images for Titanic. In addition to working on the 
Oscar winning Titanic, Daryll was involved with ?What Dreams May Come? which 
also won the visual effects Oscar and the nominated ?Apollo 13?. Since then 
he has also supported the 3Dfx hardware implementation under Linux. His 
diverse set of skills includes device drivers, 3D hardware, and high level 
rendering. 

 Strauss has written so much code for Linux and Hollywood graphics in general 
that it is a good bet that your company is already using some of that code. 
He has literally changed the way that Hollywood creates digital effects.

I first heard Daryll speak at SCALE3X and was impressed with the content and 
got interested in VoIP and have since installed Asterisk so I will be talking 
about my experiences as well.
