The sheer genius of this causes me to ROTFLMAO!  It makes perfect sense, and is the ultimate newbie mistake,  for me to be too clueless to recognize this problem.

It ALSO makes sense in that it the degree of it happening is much worse from distro to distro.  They might use up or mess with RAM in different ways. 

It ALSO points to how I can get a much easier answer here in a forum which has no buy-in to a particular distro.  In the distro-specific fora, asking the question, "why does your distro lock-up on my computer while others do not?" is in fact a fair one, but it also perhaps inherently prone to raises hackles and may make folks less likely to answer.  I guess that's human nature.

I will run to the store and buy more RAM.
