Otherwise they would have to test the 500 different consumer cards that come out every 6 months which isn't practical. In reality Maya and all the other pro software work just fine with generic geforce consumer cards and the proper driver. I hae worked for many companies with them under both linux and windows and haven't had any support issues. Same with the linux distro. Current company I work for uses Debian, others used Ubuntu, Gentoo, Mandrake, etc...
