Sorry ... I need to jump in here. See my comments in bold (I hope).

=20

The graphics card drivers on the Mac are rolled into OS X and are
controlled / released by Apple directly (and only Apple). Apple insists
on doing it this way in order to ensure that "out of the box experience"
that you refer to.

=20

Autodesk/Alias only "officially" support quadro cards because there

are a limited number of them. Otherwise they would have to test the

500 different consumer cards that come out every 6 months which isn't

practical.

That's certainly part of the reason but not the entire story.

=20

In reality Maya and all the other pro software work just fine with

generic geforce consumer cards and the proper driver. I hae worked

for many companies with them under both linux and windows and haven't

had any support issues. Same with the linux distro. Current company

I work for uses Debian, others used Ubuntu, Gentoo, Mandrake, etc...

Again no issues not using the "officially supported" distribution.

=20

And that's not strictly correct. We are aware of some issues with
"consumer" level cards and are working on our code, and ATI / NVIDIA are
working on their drivers to resolve them. Check out the online
qualification charts for the gory details. These cards are of specific
interest to game developers working on titles for the XBOX360 and/or the
PS3 so we're not ignoring these issues.=20

nux.html

=20

You'll see specific reference to video cards that don't support h/w
overlays, for example. And yes, Maya ought to run just fine on distros
that are "equivalent" to the ones we officially support (again, refer to
the qual chart which specifies the kernel, glibc, OpenMotif, libGLU and
compiler versions / options etc), but it is "caveat emptor" if you
choose to do so. Given sufficient Linux expertise, many shops do so
without issue. Smaller places without that knowledge can get themselves
into a heap of trouble that our Hotline folks simply cannot help out
with.
