Gentlemen, i am happy and pleased to be able to introduce a new development team member to you all. raghav is from India and working for Tektronix there. His skills include C, C++ and also some java. He was recently looking deeper into media programming by working with realmedia files and streaming server ( Helix ? ), and caught fire on the opensource idea. I met him on the mplayer mailing list and contacted him if he wanted to contribute to MCF and/or UCI, and fortunately he liked the idea of creating an open standard format. raghav is currently making his way through all the old posts on the mailing lists and on the forums to be up-to-date, and then will make a decision how he thinks he could contribute to the project ( see to-do-list below ). I would like you all to welcome him in the team and hope we will all have a great time together, working hard to establish MCF as the open standard for audio and video. I am indebted to you for all this. I had subscribed to all the lists on mcf, but i had given my sf account for the mail-id. I shall change that to receive the mails here. Your views are correct about getting familiar with the project and then starting on a task... i should get a little familiarity with the various things happening in our projects so that i can take up something...all the tasks in the TO-DO list look really interesting...is it ok that i shall let u know about it in a day or two? Thank you for everything and please keep the enthusiasm going, have a good day, raghav. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 3:00 PM To: Raghavendran, N Cc: [email protected] Subject: RE: RE: C++ developers needed for MCF to : raghav cc: robux4 On 22 Oct 2002 at 9:19, [email protected] wrote: > Hi Christian, > Thanks to your mail, i am now a registered user on sf :) > i am happy as i understand the oft used terms now...my id is > raghavnskb. raghav, i added you to the developers list of MCF on sourceforge.net ; if you login to sourceforge.net MCF should pop up as one your registered projects now. Note that this does not mean any kind of duty for you, it is just to allow you to access the CVS trees, means to upload or load code from CVS. With your allowance i would like to introduce you to the rest of the team now, so they are aware of your interest in participation. > about reading the news on gmane, i have a problem > with the outlook client that i am using...it times out and says > that the server is inaccessible at port 119, but i am able to access > USENET groups... I heard from some people that the news://news.gmane.org server is not very well mirrored around the world and thus hard to access for some people. I am sorry to hear about your problems accessing it, in case you cant solve this there is always the chance to subscribe to the mailing list normally ( using email ; see sf.net/projects/mcf/ , 'mailing list' ) , and browse through the archives using internet browser on www.gmane.org . > Another good thing is that i started to know about MCF, > UCI too (i need to keep revisiting as this was my first read)... > i shall try to resolve the problem with reading the news from gmane... > or i should do it from home... > thank you once again for all the patience and the help... > shall catch up with you soon, > raghav. You are more than welcome to the team raghav. Once you have read your way trough the purpose of the project and the specs i am pretty sure we could find an interesting task for you that you could take over. The 'active' development team is currently : Chief engineer : Steve L'Homme ( robux4 ) ; specs creation and documentation ; Steve is currently fighting with DocBook to document the MCF specs so we can output them in HTML, XHTML, PDF, etc. ; libmcf developer Jan Schlenker ( myFUN, kromyx ) : he is developing the MCF parser and muxer for DirectShow ; first working alphas are on www.wiesneronline.net/mcf/ , together with some first test files ( MP3 ) ; note that files are made with old libmcf, so they are not spec compliant with latest specs, this is just for testing the basic framing Lasse Karkainen ( Tronic ) ; founder of MCF, coded mcflib in C ( outdated ), currently busy with school John Cannon ( spyder482, 555 ) : he is coding MCF4Java , the java port for MCF files Jon Hickman ( milkman.dan ) : he is developing -gemma , a MCF editing and authoring tool ( menue creation, chapters, etc. ) Developers involved with MCF : Alex Stewart ( Foogod ), UCI developer ; Alban Bedel ( albeu ), mplayer developer ; Ingo Ralf Blum ( ingo ), general MCF consultant ) The MCF to-do-list : 1. Finish and freeze MCF-1 specs, put them in a DocBook format for easy distribution : robux4 ; ETA : 4 weeks 2. Update libmcf with latest specs : robux4 ; ETA : 8 weeks 3. Finish Dshow parser and start with creating Dshow muxer, also implementing UCI interface for calling UCI based en/decoders ; myFUN : 12 weeks 4. Overwork Virtualdub for Windows ( www.virtualdub.org ) to allow MCF file creation and codec interfacing via UCI, not VfW : no developer assigned yet ; ETA : ?? 5. Develop a general use UCI to VfW wrapper, so all VfW codecs can be used with MCF : no developer assigned yet ; ETA : ?? 6. Create UCI wrappers for most used closed source codecs, like DivX 5, maybe not by accessing/wrapping the VfW API interface, but the more powerful ( documented ) MP4 API : no developer assigend yet ; ETA : ?? 7. Add UCI interfaces to most of the open source codecs, like FAAD ( AAC ), Lame MP3, Vorbis ( www.xiph.org ), MPC, XviD( www.xvid.org ) : no developer assigned yet ; ETA : ?? If anything on this list catches your interest, please tell me. Of course, it seems adding UCI interfaces to many codecs was the biggest task at all, and its a vital thing for MCF, deciding about the future of the whole project. For more details on UCI goto www.sf.net/projects/uci . Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
