"running a crap shareware program" ?
no, apps cannot crash the linux OS directly. they may be mean very high load
which can crash unstable hardware/drivers (like the scrolling with netscape
using the buggy S3 vga driver). yes, win2k may be ok, but win98 crashes
several times by applications, due to common memory space (app A can trash
app B's or even kernel's memory) and memory leaks everywhere.
