Thank you. However, compilation fails with $(PTHREAD_LIBS), because the variable is set empty (at least on my Debian sid Linux/glibc-2.7/gcc-4.2/i386 system). The algorithm that is used to detect the pthreads implementation seems to believe that it is sufficient to only pass '-pthread' to the CFLAGS, which is obviously wrong. Please try yourself, it' only 5 minutes...

To avoid unnecessary dependencies on libraries. Extremely usefull if you package software (e.g. for Debian) and if the package management tool believes that all libraries that the binary objects are linked against are hard dependencies. Furthermore you may see it as a test if all objects are linked correctly... ;)
