autoconf / automake

Hi,

as far as I can tell, we are using quite old autoconf/automake versions?
At least, without too much further testing (maybe this evening...?) a
fresh CVS-Checkout doesn't do much, when trying to compile on Ubuntu
Hardy, here... Except a nice error-message when starting ./autogen.sh.
