Atomic integers?

According to the .spec file, mjpegtools currently depends on glib2. glib2 has an atomic-integer library (the g_atomic*() functions), but nothing in the project uses them yet. Is there any reason I shouldn't use them? I'm planning out some more multithreaded improvements and would like to use something more lightweight than mutexes and conditions.
