I do still have a (virtual machine) Gentoo installation that doesn't
include X11 and I've downloaded the current CVS version and built it
successfully. In particular, the png2yuv tool builds and links without
error, whereas it didn't before.

So, it looks like the effort has paid off. There must be some kind of
competition for blasts from the past bugs such as this that we can enter
this commit for...

I've added a pointer to this update to the Gentoo bug I raised (if
anyone's still looking at it...)
