I've seen that post and it was part of my decision to try arch.

| mjpegtools doesn't support v4l2 as yet and the original v4l
| (without the 2) has been removed from the kernel. This means that
| mjpegtools compiles without v4l support meaning no 'lavrec'.

I thought that Ubuntu-repositories simply had a very old 
mjpegtools-versions (as they tend to do) and that newer versions of 
mjpegtools supported v4l2. lavrec being available in the arch-package 
for mjpegtools further strengthened this thought. I've also seen posts 
from 2011 trying to get lavrec to compile against v4l2.

If lavrec only accepts v4l-input and there is no working patch to get it 
to support v4l2, I see several options:

* I've read that there is some kind of compatibility layer to allow 
v4l-style access to v4l2-devices. Would this work with lavrec?
* Is v4l completely removed from the kernel or simply disabled? Could I 
compile a (current) kernel supporting v4l and run lavrec?
* Does a current lavrec work with older kernels? I could try using some 
older distribution (with v4l still available or at least compilable into 
the kernel) as a second bootable system only for recording video.
