RE: [MPEGIF News] News Digest Returns

Yes indeed...this is an announcement that an actual operator will deploy
MPEG-4 Part 10, Main Profile. Level 3 for a significant Broadcast and On
Demand Video Entertainment service....the MV100 units are already shipping
to customers and we, Harmonic, are waiting for the imminent availability of
their set top boxes for interoperability testing and optimization before the
encoding systems, (which are capable of MPEG2, MPEG-4 Part 10, Main Profile,
Level 3 and (soon, when released) Windows Media 9 Series VC-9 Advanced
Profile video codecs in the same platform) move from the enhanced MPEG-2
level to the Next Generation video codecs. It is an exceptional breakthrough
of an operator announcing committed adoption of what we at Harmonic call
Next Generation Encoding for a real revenue bearing service. This is in
advance of firm competitive licencing terms for MPEG-4 Part 10
 
Both MPEG-4 Part 10, Main Profile and Window Media 9 Series Advanced Profile
are exceptional codecs and will both play a critical part in the increased
availability of digital video services to the home (and elsewhere) in the
future.

I never said the Harmonic news wasn't important, I just said it wasn't the
first commercial deployment of the standard.  No offense intended. 
 
Can you clarify exactly what the status of this deployment is?  I didn't get
a clear understanding from the news item about when this implementation will
ship to end-user customers.

Tandberg and Polycom are in video conferencing systems. Harmonic is #1 in
the world of broadcast video encoding systems. I think our news is ground
breaking as, to my knowledge, it is the first announcement of adoption of
MPEG-4 Part 10, Main Profile, Level 3 in broadcast video......if anyone has
seen any prior announcements I would greatly appreciate their links..

Thanks for your comments. I talked to Harmonic and they really see this as
an AVC deployment, even though this may arguably be unclear from their
release.
I know about H.264 being introduced in the videoconferencing space - but I
hadn't come across any press releases myself yet. Credit where credit is due

Regarding the comment that Harmonic may be the first commercial AVC
deployment: I notice that the referenced Harmonic's press release still
seems to refer to AVC capabilities primarily in the future tense.  
 
However, in any case, this is not the first. The industry that is really
deploying AVC first is the videoconferencing community.  Polycom and
Tandberg (the #1 and #2 companies in that world) have both been claiming to
be shipping it for six months or more.  (However, I have not yet heard of
their shipping products achieving interoperability with each other's
products, so some real work remains to be done in that area.)
