I tried some older hardware etc. and came to the conclusion this all works differently these days anyway than what I remembered and compared to why it was designed to do all this weird stuff.
As a result I think this patch is ok.
I've however not actually tested it.
Happy if someone else does that and commits it, if not I'll try to find time for it some time.
