mplayer film.avi -vo mpegpes -vf scale=720:576,lavc

It works.
But I have to add ,lavc, otherwise it doesn't.

Problem a 4/3 movie has good aspect, but a 16/9 is squashed.
Is there a missing option ?

With a pIII-1Gz -- 256 mo, the output is shoky.
Is there an option that helps ?
