The problem was clearly PEBKAC. I had forgotten, that I had done a clean in 
the kernel source dir.
The following behaviour is kinda odd:

root@piccolo:misc# insmod /lib/modules/2.6.11/misc/mga_vid.ko
insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.11/misc/mga_vid.ko': -1 Invalid 
module format
root@piccolo:misc# insmod /lib/modules/2.6.11.6/misc/mga_vid.ko

Perhaps this should be documented?
