No, I did not have the development headers installed. Installed zlib-devel and now the compile completes on 32-bit Linux with GCC 4.4.7. Thank you for your help. These are the only steps required to compile on 4.4.7 32-bit (I am still fixing a linker error on 64-bit).

(1) Add to ffmpeg/ffbuild/common.mak the following cpp flag:

CPPFLAGS += -Icompat/atomics/gcc

(2) Install zlib-devel
