Yes. On Fedora, after reading this, I found the distro installed mplayer worked because I had the libaom package installed. Probably also why vlc, ffplay, and totem worked. But, my locally compiled svn version didn't work because the libaom development package wasn't installed. I installed it and compiled again, and 'Bingo!, we have a winner!'.
