Why would mplayer not control the volu me?

My built-in audio is misbehaving so I plugged in a USB audio adaptor and changed mplayer.conf from
ao=alsa:device=hw=0.0
to:
ao=alsa:device=hw=1.0
mplayer's volume keys say they're changing the volume but they don't. alsamixer and amixer work.
