mplayer vs mpv

Hi mplayer peeps,

I have been using mplayer for a long, long time but I have run into a
problem playing internet radio sites.

It should be possible to play a radio station with:
mplayer -playlist 'https://somafm.com/defcon130.pls'

But I get error: Error parsing option on the command line: -playlist

So an alternative is to use mpv instead.

mpv -playlist https://somafm.com/defcon130.pls

Then I read that mpv is a replacement for mplayer. Now I am not sure
about that. Can anyone shed light on the expected longevity of mplayer?
Is it being deprecated? Is mpv an expected or even official
replacement?
