5 to 10 seconds is extreamly long breaks.  are you sure you managed to
compile everything correctly.  Might have picked up some code from
an old version or something.  What distrubution is this, can you
use one of the binary packages?

Ok so it's something with your setup rather than the DVDs.

What sound card is this?
You do have DMA, unmaks irq and other relevant option turned on on your
DVD drive right?
Could you give us the output from 'hdparm /dev/dvd'

Well clock should sync agains the system realtime clock rather than against
the audio cards clock.  With 5 to 10 second breaks I doubt that is the
problem.
