Thank you. I wasn't aware of this problem.  The system administrators
change the setup here to use 24bpp root window for warious reasons
(such as lots of program not getting the fact that the could use a
24bpp display even though the root window was 8bpp).
Easy to forget about this when you don't have such a system ;)
One could argue that it should prehaps be part of some standard init
code in gtk/gnome.

I've added your code to cvs now.
