There will just be black borders around the picture. How to enable/get Xv working depends on what gfxcard and what version of XFree86 you are running. Some of the gfxcard manufactureres have their own binary X drivers that you must use to get Xv. Some cards only work with a new version of XFree86 (4.3.0).
