i debuged  a little bit:
it bombs out on line 
 788 of dvdread/dvd_reader.c
   
ret = dvdinput_seek( device->dev, (int) lb_number );

with ret == -1,
device->dev seems valid, 
lb_number == 256

gdb refuses to step in dvdinput_seek() since this is a function pointer.
Or i'am to stupid.
