If you have Xv enabled in ogle (which is default). There should be 'Xv'
printed among other things in the title of the ogle video window.
For Xv to work your xserver driver for your gfxcard needs to support Xv
also. Even with Xv some cards can't scale the picture down (just up).
The format on a dvd is 720x480 or 720x576 so any screen resolution lower
than this means that you need to scale down or you don't see the whole
picture.

This is a problem with your gfxcard/drivers. A faster CPU won't help.
I don't know what gfx chipset you have on your laptop so I can't help more.
Perhaps if someone else on this list has the same laptop model and has
some more info?
Otherwise I think you should ask on one of the XFree86 mailinglists, they
should know more about the gfxchipset and what is supported in the XFree86
drivers (if Xv works).
