Okay, I think I changed the rc file incorrectly. Here is what I now have
in the audio section. It gets past the Warnding splash screens (where it
used to crash) and now it starts a movie preview and locks up, giving me
this output:

  Xscreensaver not running.
  No accelerated colorspace coversion found
  display: frame rate: -0.000 fps
  No accelerated IMDCT transform found

It give me a hash mark or two (##) on the command line, and the just
locks up, leaving the green movie preview screen ("This preview is apt
for any schmoe and his grandma," etc.). 

I still have no sound. I mean, I can't get to the place where there
would be sound.
